Sebago Lake

The Sebago Lake watershed (Upper Presumpscot watershed) is more than 50 miles long, with headwaters in Bethel and the lake outlet in Standish at Sebago Lake Dam. The watershed includes all or parts of 24 towns, and covers approximately 440 square miles. The lake’s natural footprint expanded with the construction of the thirty-foot tall Sebago Lake Dam, and today the dam’s outlet is regarded as the start of the Presumpscot River. Sebago Lake is the deepest and second largest lake (after Moosehead Lake) in Maine. The lake is 12 miles long and its shoreline stretches 105 miles. It is surrounded by the towns of Casco, Naples, Raymond, Sebago, Standish and Windham. Sebago Lake is the water source for Greater Portland, 15% of Maine’s population. The lake is one of the cleanest drinking water sources in the northeastern United States. But because so much of the forest surrounding it is privately owned and subject to development pressures, the Sebago Lake watershed is vulnerable. The Crooked River contributes more surface inflow to Sebago Lake than any other tributary.

The mission of Friends of Sebago Lake (FOSL) is to promote an understanding of the interconnected harmful impacts of unnatural freshwater flows by dam regulation and to advocate for the restoration of natural freshwater seasonal water flows from inland waters to the seas.
